Most mornings, my parental calling is to play the role of the carpool dad and drop my kids off at school along with 2 other kids in our carpool.
The kids are in 5th, 4th, 1st and Kindergarden.
And when they are in the car, I am pretty much forced to listen to whatever new bubblegum songs are on the radio and hear 4 kids sing every-last-word-to-each-song.
In a lot of ways, it is pretty much the same as when I was a kid — but I have to admit that it seems kind of strange when the Kindergartener knows all the words to a Lady GaGa song.
And not very long ago during my carpool duties, I started hearing about some kid named Justin Bieber.
And then I saw a picture of the kid and my first reaction was give me a break.
How much talent could this kid really have?
Just looking at him, one of the early thoughts that went through my mind was “I can’t wait for this guy to end up in the same graveyard as Milli Vanilli or have an Ashley Simpson episode on Saturday Night Live.
And then I happened to see his interview with Jay Leno.
And at some point in the interview… in a way… I fell in love with Justin Bieber.
Don’t laugh. You might too.
Skip to 2:25 of the interview in this video and see for yourself.
Jay Leno: So how did your career begin?
Justin Bieber: I started just posting videos online and I just kept getting bigger and bigger. And then I got found by a manager who introduced me to Justin Timberlake and Usher who both wanted to sign me…
Business translation: If you have something that you want to do, just start doing it. And if you are good enough, the right people will find you.
And if you have read Gary Vanerchuck’s book Crush It, or if you think you might be an entrepreneur – you will probably fall in love with Justin Bieber too.
So now there are two different people in my house who are in love with Justin Bieber — my 11 year-old daughter and… me.
I just wish I could stand his music.
